Welcome to Grand Island, NY

Overview

Grand Island is a town and island in northwestern Erie County. Grand Island is the largest island in the Niagara River and the fourth-largest in New York State. The town is on the western edge of New York State and on the U.S.-Canadian international border, although there is no river crossing from here to Canada. Grand Island has a rich history as a former home to Native Americans, French and British. The town is perhaps best known as home of Martin’s Fantasy Island amusement park.

Essentials

A wide variety of shopping can be found in the city of Buffalo and in Niagara Falls. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls, which is livelier than its American counterpart, is a quick drive from here, although border crossings can sometimes be lengthy. For groceries, there’s a Tops Friendly Markets store in town, on Grand island Boulevard.

Recreation & Entertainment

The town’s main attractions are the amusement park and the two state parks. The town also has a garden center and a rod and gun club. The big attractions are in Niagara Falls – both the U.S. and Canadian sides have casinos, nightclubs, museums and other entertainment, but the Canadian side is livelier. Buffalo, of course, has a lot to do, including professional sports, museums, orchestras and theater..

Transportation & Traffic

Interstate 190 crosses the island by way of the North and South Grand Island bridges. Beaver Island Parkway runs from I-190 to Beaver Island State Park.

Pros & Cons

You’re a stone’s throw from Niagara Falls and all of its attractions in Grand Island. The two state parks are an attractive selling point. Proximity to the city of Buffalo, as well as the international crossing to Canada, is a plus.
