Clarence is a fast-growing town in northeastern Erie County, bordered to the north by Tonawanda Creek and Lockport (Niagara County), to the east by Newstead, to the south by Lancaster, and to the west by Amherst. The town’s population jumped by more than 17 percent from 2000 to 2010, and more than 30,000 people now reside in Clarence. Part of the town is suburban, and the rest is light industry and agricultural. The town has several hamlets – most notably, Clarence Center – and many communities, but no incorporated villages.
Clarence was the first town to be established in Erie County, and Buffalo – the county seat, and the second-largest city in New York State – was formed from Clarence. Gypsum mining was done in Clarence in the 20th century. The town gained notoriety in 2009, when Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence Center, killing dozens of passengers and four crew members. The town holds an annual 5K race to commemorate the event.

The Clarence Historical Society Museum is at 10465 Main St. Antique World Market is a sprawling flea market complex that is open year-round. The Asa Ransom House is a circa 1853 bed and breakfast named after Asa Ransom, one of the area’s earliest settlers.
